As a poet thinks so the ink flows. In succinct and apt images the poems in Echoes in the Heart dexterously examines the current state of our social anomie. You feel the emotion, the passion and conviction of the poet’s thematic preoccupation in each poem. The world in the free flowing rhythmic universe captured here is built on the scaffold of an acute sensitivity to justice, fairness, love, service and the healing power of reasoned truth.
In poem after poem the poet finds a tone that resonates and enhances the rendering of the message either in dead pan seriousness or a hilarious and jokey mood; the despoliation of the Niger Delta, political corruption, rascality and rapacity of the ruining elite class are dragged in various shades of vivid imagery. Heroes and pacesetters like Gabriel Okara are glowingly celebrated. Of course as a woman, motherhood, love, relationships and gender related issues are nagging issues but they are telescoped with a lens that is not refractive or retributive. The poet persona is enamoured of a world of complementarity where dominion should be primed for power purpose and not self and personal aggrandizement. The refrain ‘I want to be a poem’ in ‘Gratitude’ sets a foreground that modulates the poet’s idea of what the poems entail, as they leap to the throaty delight of the reader and the voice of the poet echoes and echoes.
This collection is not only a breath of fresh air and a thrust to hope and ambrosia in the anomie of our social reality but also an invite to the delicacies of unpretentious poetry and the delightful use of language in the voice of a poet that has found a voice of her own.
